Zoom “chat” window accessibility issue on Zoom’s repair schedule

UMS:IT learned recently that screen-reader and keyboard-dependent users could not access, copy, or follow hyperlinks posted in the “chat” window in Zoom conferencing sessions.   The issue prevents those users from visiting web resources posted during a meeting to the chat window.

Digital Technology Advisory Committee members confirmed the issue and UMS:IT staff conferred with colleagues at other higher education institutions through the Educause IT Accessibility community group.  UMS:IT staff contacted Zoom to alert them to the issue.  After a relatively short analysis period Zoom support acknowledged the issue and reported that their development area is planning on repairing the issue in their March 2020 upgrade.

Alerting manufacturers to accessibility barriers is the only way to get them fixed.

Thanks to all who participated!
