How to Make PDFs Accessible
The University of Maine System website is required to provide accessible documents on our website, which includes Portable Document Format (PDF) documents, Word documents, PowerPoint documents and other document media. Below are some options for generating accessible PDFs.
- Adobe Acrobat Pro includes an accessibility checker and tools to fix many PDF accessibility issues (External Site). Often, however, it is best to fix the source document of the PDF. If you would like to purchase Adobe Acrobat Pro for your university-provided computer, please contact the University System Information Technology (US:IT) Service Desk.
- The PAVE PDF Accessibility Checker (External Site) is a free online PDF checker and repair tool. Because uploaded PDFs are uploaded to this service website you should not use it for any PDFs that contain confidential (compliant) data.
