USM — Message From President Cummings to University Community, 12:10 PM, 8/27/20:

Dear USM Community,

I write to inform you of a case of COVID-19 that we are coordinating with the Maine CDC on and that was identified through asymptomatic testing conducted at the Gorham Campus.

The out-of-state student who tested positive

  • Is now living in Maine, but not in a USM residence hall
  • Is taking no on-campus classes this fall
  • Is currently in isolation at home
  • Was only on campus for asymptomatic testing.

Contact tracing is underway. Based on the circumstances of this case, the Maine CDC has determined that no quarantining of USM students, faculty or staff is required at this time.

System-wide, more than 3,200 test results have been received and will be reported on the UMS COVID-19 Testing Summary dashboard tomorrow morning. That update will include a new positive result linked to our testing at USM. For daily case updates from each System campus, please see the Together for Maine website

This is a good time to remember the point of asymptomatic testing: We actually want to find positive cases. That’s why we’re screening. While it may seem counterintuitive, there’s great value in identifying people who are positive so we can then take measures to keep the virus from spreading within the USM community.

This communication comes to you out of our efforts to be transparent and open as possible as we move forward in our efforts to ensure that everyone in our community — students, faculty and staff — stays safe.

Thank you for your ongoing efforts to keep all Huskies healthy during the pandemic.

Glenn Cummings

President
