This micro-credential recognizes and validates learners’ intermediate-level knowledge and skills for special education paraprofessionals. Learners meet standards aligned with the Council for Exceptional Children’s Core Competencies for Special Education Paraprofessionals. They:

  • Level 1: Gain foundational knowledge of special education, such as the history of special education, relevant laws and regulations, disability categories, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Level 2: Apply evidence-based concepts such as high-leverage practices, differentiated instructional supports, and teaching methods by observing and reflecting on special education practices in their schools.
  • Level 3: Apply all concepts in Levels 1 and 2 by responding to and reflecting on case studies, as well as assessing their current strengths and areas for growth and creating a plan for further training.

Throughout the pathway, learners are assessed using quizzes, case studies, reflection activities, and other rubric-based assignments. This training was developed by subject-matter experts from the University of Maine (UMaine) and is designed to be completed in approximately 30 hours.
