This micro-credential recognizes and validates learners’ intermediate competency in effective reading instruction. Learners meet standards aligned with the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. They:

  • Level 1: Gain foundational knowledge about the “Big 5” of reading (phonological awareness, phonics and decoding, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary), as well as spelling, and broad instructional practices for reading.
  • Level 2: Deepen understanding of the science of reading, a comprehensive, interdisciplinary body of research describing effective literacy instructional practices, and reflect on their strengths and areas of need in reading instruction.
  • Level 3: Apply their skills by creating and delivering at least one lesson aligned to the science of reading, reflecting on the experience, and creating an action plan that includes a self-assessment on future instructional adaptations that align with science of reading.

Throughout the pathway, learners are assessed using quizzes, a curriculum assessment, reflection activities, and other rubric-based assignments. This training was developed by subject-matter experts from the University of Maine (UMaine) and is designed to be completed in approximately 30 hours.
