Together for Maine Daily Briefing and COVID-19 Data Update: 10/29/20

University of Maine System COVID Data by Campus

5 — Known Case of UMS students or employees in public health agency Isolation

  • 1 UMaine:
  • 2 UMF:
  • 2 USM:  One new case involving an individual identified in UMS testing

There are no known cases at the other University of Maine System universities.

The above Data reflects ACTIVE known cases identified through the UMS asymptomatic screening and other testing venues.  When an individual is released from an isolation order by a public health agency the active case number shared in the Together for Maine daily update is reduced to reflect that change.  UMS is reporting five known cases today, one more than the number of cases reported in the 10/28/20 update.

Asymptomatic Screening Update for Fall Safe Return

  • 26,165 Tests Results to Date
  • 26 positives results representing new diagnoses of COVID-19

The Asymptomatic Screening Dashboard at Together.Maine.edu represents known results on all asymptomatic tests going back to July 22, 2020.  About 48 hours passes from the time a test sample is collected and when the results are known.

Fifth Round of Sampling Underway:  The University of Maine System is in the midst of its fifth round of sampling.  This round will include amplified testing of all residence hall students at the University of Maine at Farmington in response to cases identified in Round 4 sampling (see October 21 update) and an amplified response at University facilities in Waldo County.

5,600 Tests in Round 4 Identify 8 cases of infection:  The University of Maine System has concluded its fourth round of sampling that included amplified testing of all residence hall students following the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Holiday Weekend.  That testing identified and isolated eight cases of infection that have been reported in the UMS Daily COVID-19 Data updates.  As reported above, UMS universities have five known, active cases.

UMS Scientific Advisory Board Analysis of Round 4 Sampling:  The University of Maine System Scientific Advisory Board Chaired by President Joan Ferrini-Mundy has reviewed the results of the latest round of sampling.  More than 5,600 tests were completed, including all residential students and more than 1,000 tests as part of a random sample of members of the University community.

With 1 positive result in the random sample, the results support an inference with 95% confidence that the University System’s in-person population has an estimated prevalence rate of no more than 0.11%*.

The Advisory Board and the University System also monitor the positivity rate (number of positive results out of total number of test results) of the University System’s own testing overall.  The current positivity rate in Maine overall is approximately 0.7% and the current national positivity rate is estimated at a much higher rate of approximately 6.2%.

The  current overall positivity rate from the University System’s own testing is 0.1% or 26 new positive tests of ~26,000 completed tests.  In the most recent round of testing, the University System’s positivity rate was approximately 0.14% or 8 positive results of ~5,600 completed tests.
