Students from Campus Kujalleq participated in a 2-month long academic program at the University of Southern Maine in June and July 2024. During the month of June, students participated in coursework on campus and learned more about hospitality and tourism in the U.S. market, while gaining place-based experience with field trips and excursions highlighting local sustainable tourism efforts. During the month of July, students applied their knowledge in the workplace while developing their professional experience with on-site job placements at luxury hotels, tour operators, outdoor recreation outfitters, and Indigenous-led organizations. When they weren’t working in the tourism industry, students had the opportunity to be tourists themselves with place-based cultural and recreational activities. Students exited the program with applied knowledge in the industry that will benefit their local communities in Greenland where the tourism industry is growing rapidly.
