2025 Vacationland Conference at the University of Maine

The THOR Institute was thrilled to host the 2025 Vacationland Conference at the University of Maine in Orono on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. With nearly 100 participants, this event was a fantastic opportunity to come together to explore the future of Maine-based career paths in tourism, hospitality, and outdoor recreation (THOR).

The Vacationland Conference was a great way for students and educators to learn more about connecting their passions to the educational pathways that will lead to solid careers in THOR-related sectors throughout the state of Maine. We were excited to be joined by the Chancellor of the University of Maine System, Dannell Malloy, as well as Jeff McCabe from the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation, who both shared insights about their experiences in THOR-related industries. The THOR Institute Executive Committee highlighted some of their favorite features of THOR programming at each of Maine’s public universities, showcasing the diversity of each region of our state, which was complemented by THOR student contributions based on their experiences with place-based programming at each university.

During the College & Career Fair, participants had the opportunity to connect with representatives from Maine’s public universities and THOR-related businesses and organizations to learn more about current happenings around the state. Brian Threlkeld from Maine Outdoor Brands shared a fantastic presentation, as well, highlighting workforce development and career pathway efforts, as well as their new “Day on the Job” video series.

The THOR Professional Panel brought together a diverse group of industry professionals, who shared about their work and the inspiration for it, as well as the pathways that led them to where they are now. Panelists included: Matt Polstein, from New England Outdoor Center in Millinocket; LeRae Kinney, from Ignite PI in Presque Isle; Chiara Moriconi from the Maine Office of Tourism; Tracy Willette, from Bangor Parks & Recreation; and Brianna Guy from Hirundo Wildlife Refuge in Old Town. Following these sessions, participants had the opportunity to explore the area with student-led tours of Maine Bound Adventure Center, the Hudson Museum, and Hotel Ursa.

We would like to express our deepest appreciation for everyone who made this event possible! Thank you to all of our partners who shared so many great insights about their unique experiences with the audience, and thank you to all of the educators and students who attended this event to learn more about shaping a vision for the future of THOR-related industries in Maine.

We look forward to seeing you all at the next event!
