New Vacationland Course: Winter Recreation & Hospitality Business in Northern Maine

The THOR Institute is excited to announce our upcoming Vacationland Course – Winter Recreation & Hospitality Business (BUS 340: Special Topics in Business) in Northern Maine! This immersive, place-based course will be hosted by the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where students will have the opportunity to go on an authentic adventure in Northern Maine.

Students will experience ice fishing on one of Maine’s northernmost remote lakes, explore miles of Nordic ski trails and learn the basics of Olympic sport biathlon, dip your spoon into moose stew, learn what it’s like to run a dog sledding operation, and more – all while earning three credits towards your degree! During these experiential learning activities, students will develop a deeper understanding of this unique region in Maine, particularly in regards to its business environment, seasonal recreation opportunities (especially during winter), hospitality and lodging infrastructure, and supply of other tourist attractions.

This course runs from January 11 (arrival) through January 26, 2026.

For more information, visit https://www.maine.edu/thor/winter-course/. Students who are interested in enrolling should fill out this brief application form before the priority deadline on November 10. Space is limited. No prerequisites or previous winter recreation experience required.

If you have questions, please reach out to Emily Zider, the Program Manager at the THOR Institute, at emily.zider@maine.edu.

We look forward to seeing you in Fort Kent!
