A Tourism, Hospitality, and Outdoor Recreation (THOR) Institute Vacationland Course hosted by UMM, open to students from any of Maine’s 7 public universities

Paddle into fall semester! Join us in Machias the week before fall semester begins to earn three credits learning about nature-based tourism and conservation. This course introduces students to conservation strategies, initiatives, and projects along coastal areas and islands in Maine. Students will participate in sea kayaking activities (including an overnight camping trip), visit conserved lands, and interact with local land trusts that preserve and steward these lands. Students will also learn techniques to minimize impacts while engaging in outdoor recreational activities along Maine’s coasts.
Dates
August 24-28, 2026 (in-person, experiential learning component in Machias) with additional online pre-course and post-course activities
