THOR Institute Vacationland Course: Winter Recreation & Hospitality Business in Northern Maine
Winter 2026, University of Maine at Fort Kent
Students from across the University of Maine System had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a true winter experience at the University of Maine at Fort Kent in early January. Students delved into place-based experiential learning opportunities while learning about the unique character of winter recreation and hospitality in Northern Maine.
As you can see above, students participated in rich learning experiences that allowed them to not only discover the beauty of the region, but also to develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the local industry and the people who call this region home. Students had the opportunity to participate in: ice fishing, skiing, dog sledding, snowshoeing, engaging with local community partners, and sampling the local cuisine – moose stew!
“I learned about how it takes a network of volunteers and local people to invest in supporting these organizations, and about the value of having a place where the community can connect and come together,” said one student participant. “I really enjoyed my experience and I would take this course again, if I could!”
Thank you to our community partners, instructors, and students for making this such a fantastic learning experience in Northern Maine.
Stay tuned for more information about our next Vacationland course in August 2026!
