Getting Started

Set up your Maine technology.

Work through your checklist in order — account, security, email, then the tools you’ll use every day. If any step doesn’t go as expected, the Help Desk is one call, chat, or ticket away.

Welcome to Maine’s public universities. These eight steps get your account, email, security, Wi-Fi, and coursework ready before your first day.

Step 1

Your acceptance email includes your MaineStreet ID. Activate your account to create your username and a strong password — this is your single sign-on for everything.

Step 2

Register your phone for MFA. Depending on your campus and role, you’ll use either Duo or Microsoft Authenticator. It adds a second step to every sign-in, so a stolen password isn’t enough on its own. Add a backup method so you’re never locked out.

Step 3

Your university email is the official channel for everything from instructors and advising. Sign in to Gmail, then add it to your phone so you never miss a message.

Step 4

Both come free with your account. Use Google Drive and Docs for collaboration, and install the Office apps on your laptop for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Step 5

On campus, choose the eduroam network and sign in with your full maine.edu address and password. It reconnects automatically — and works at universities worldwide.

Step 6

Brightspace is where your courses live — syllabi, assignments, readings, and grades. Courses usually appear a few days before the term starts.

Step 7

Some classes, advising sessions, and study groups meet over Zoom. Install the app and sign in with your maine.edu account so your name shows correctly.

Step 8

The support portal is open anytime, so you can submit a request day or night — and reach the Help Desk by phone during business hours for password resets, device issues, and anything that won’t cooperate.

Welcome to the faculty. This checklist covers your account and security basics, then the teaching tools you’ll use to run your courses.

Step 1

Your department sponsors your account. Once notified, activate it to set your password — your single sign-on for email, Brightspace, MaineStreet, and Zoom.

Step 2

Set up MFA and add a backup method. Depending on your campus and role, you’ll use either Duo or Microsoft Authenticator. It is required for all UMS logins and protects the student data you’re responsible for.

Step 3

Sign in to Gmail and add it to your devices. Share your Google Calendar with your department and set up scheduling for office hours.

Step 4

Your course shells are created automatically from the registrar. Add your syllabus, content modules, and gradebook — and copy materials forward from a past term.

Step 5

Sign in with single sign-on for your licensed account, then schedule recurring class meetings and link them inside Brightspace for one-click student access.

Step 6

Join eduroam with your full maine.edu address. It follows you to other campuses and partner institutions for conferences and visits.

Step 7

The VPN gives secure access to restricted systems and department file shares when you’re working from home or traveling. Sign in with your account and MFA.

Step 8

Before your first class, visit your room to try the podium and projector. Save the Help Desk number for same-day, in-class support.

Welcome aboard. This checklist gets your account, security, communication, and the systems you’ll use day to day up and running.
