Celebrating a New Chapter for Maine Entrepreneurship
On September 15, 2026, the Maine Center and Maine Center for Entrepreneurs (MCE) gathered at Luke’s Lobster in Portland with University of Maine System leaders, entrepreneurs, mentors, partners, funders, elected officials, and members of Maine’s small business community to celebrate MCE’s nearly 30 years of impact and announce the next chapter for its programs through the Maine Center.

The program featured remarks from MCE, Maine Center, and University of Maine System leadership about the transition, continuity of MCE’s programs, and opportunities to strengthen support for entrepreneurs across the state. UMS Chancellor Dannel Malloy announced a $2 million investment from the Harold Alfond Foundation to support MCE’s programs and their transition to the Maine Center, while UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy highlighted opportunities to connect entrepreneurs with university research, commercialization expertise, and UMaine Cooperative Extension.
Luke’s Lobster Co-Founder Ben Conniff reflected on the importance of entrepreneurial support and the role both MCE and the University of Maine played in helping launch and grow Luke’s Lobster. The event also included a special recognition of retiring MCE Executive Director Tom Rainey, presented by State Senator Jill Duson on behalf of the Maine Legislature, honoring his years of leadership and contributions to Maine’s entrepreneurial community.
The gathering celebrated the people and partnerships that have shaped MCE’s legacy while looking ahead to expanded connections, resources, and opportunities for Maine entrepreneurs and small businesses.
