Together for Maine Daily Briefing and COVID-19 Data Update: 10/19/20

University of Maine System COVID Data by Campus

7 — Known Case of UMS students or employees in public health agency Isolation

  • 5 UMA:
  • 1 UMaine:
  • 1 UMF:  One new case involving an on-campus student.  See below

There are no known cases at the other University of Maine System universities.

The above Data reflects ACTIVE known cases identified through the UMS asymptomatic screening and other testing venues.  When an individual is released from an isolation order by a public health agency the active case number shared in the Together for Maine daily update is reduced to reflect that change.  UMS is reporting seven known cases today, one more than the cases reported in the 10/18/20 update.

UMA:   President Rebecca Wyke continues to keep the University of Maine at Augusta updated on the status of the cases associated with the university and the on-going collaboration with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  As President Wyke shares today, three of the cases at UMA are close contacts affiliated with the dental clinic.  The clinic remains closed as was first reported last week in the 10/16/20 briefing.

UMF:   10/18/20 Message from President Edward Serna

Dear UMF Community –

We have received confirmation that a UMF community member has tested positive for COVID-19 after participating in the Phase III Round IV asymptomatic testing process.

The individual has been contacted and is currently in isolation and their roommate has been moved into quarantine. Both students are receiving appropriate support at this time. The positive test result has been reported to the Maine CDC, which will conduct contact tracing and notify employees, students, and visitors who may have been affected with support from UMF. You may be contacted by the CDC and/or UMF if affected.

Our Phase III random sample testing initiative will continue until the Thanksgiving Break when we transition to remote learning for the remainder of the fall semester.  Random sample testing is important in minimizing the spread of the coronavirus at our campus. If randomly selected to participate, you are strongly encouraged to engage in the process.

This is the first positive case on campus. Until today, UMF’s asymptomatic testing program has identified no positive COVID-19 cases, with just over 2500 tests having been administered since August 11.

System-wide, more than 21,000 test results have been received and are reported on the UMS COVID-19 Testing Summary dashboard. For UMS daily case updates from each System campus, please see the Together for Maine website. Tomorrow’s update will include this new positive result linked to UMF.

The COVID-19 situation in Maine is shifting and positive case numbers all around the state are on the rise. We must continue our efforts to stop the spread. Please wear your face coverings, keep your distance, stay home if you are sick, wash your hands, participate in the asymptomatic testing program if randomly chosen. Help us keep our communities safe. And remember, we’re all in this together – even at six feet apart.

We all wish our student a speedy recovery. We’ll be in touch with further updates as necessary.

Be well, Beavers,

Edward
