UMaine Students Sought For Presidential Search Committee

UMaine Undergraduates Invited to Apply for Appointment To University of Maine
Presidential Search Committee Before August 10, 2017 Deadline

ORONO, MAINE:  UMaine Undergraduate Student Government President Mary Celeste Floreani reached out to her peers this week to invite student participation in the UMaine Presidential Search.  The text of her e-mail correspondence with the UMaine undergraduate student body follows:

President Susan J. Hunter will be ending nearly thirty years of scholarship, service, and leadership at the University of Maine in June of 2018.  As such the university will be launching a nationwide presidential search to lead our campus and community into the future.

The University of Maine System Board of Trustees is seeking a search committee member and an alternate to represent the UMaine undergraduate student body.  I am writing to make every student aware of this opportunity to serve and to share how the University of Maine Student Government will select our representatives to the search committee.

If you are interested in serving please email me a letter of interest and a resume by Friday, August 10th for formal consideration by the Executive Board of University of Maine Student Government.  Please consider the expectations and our appointment process before submitting materials for review.

Search Committee Expectations

Voluntary service on the search committee will be a significant time commitment spanning much of the 2017-2018 Academic Year.  Our appointment and alternate to the committee must plan to be on campus for both the fall and spring semesters.

The search committee will begin its work early in the fall semester with organizational meetings and remain active into the spring semester with deliberations, reviewing applicant materials, interviewing candidates, and hosting campus visits for finalists.

The search for UMaine’s next president will be a transparent and campus-engaged effort that will provide every student with a chance to participate, visit with the finalists, and contribute to the selection process.  There would be an expectation that the student representative and alternate to the search committee commit themselves to regular engagement on the search process with student government leaders and the student body at large.

Student Government Appointment Process

The deadline for submitting a letter of interest and resume is August 10, 2017.  Please submit these materials electronically to my campus email address: Mary.Floreani@maine.edu.

The Executive Board of UMaine Student Government will review materials and select a group of finalists for consideration by the General Student Senate.  Applicants will be notified of their status by Friday, August 25 with finalists encouraged to attend the General Student Senate meeting on Tuesday, August 29.  This meeting and the deliberations leading to the undergraduate appointments of the presidential search committee member and alternate will be conducted in open session.

The UMaine Student Government Cabinet will consider the Senate’s appointments at its meeting scheduled for August 30 before the undergraduate student appointments are forwarded to the search committee.

Additional Materials

On May 30 President Hunter shared a message with the UMaine community about her plans to retire effective June 30, 2018.  You can view that message on the UMaine website.

This letter from Trustee Gregory Johnson, Chair of the UMaine Presidential Search, requests the appointment of two UMaine undergraduate students to serve as a search committee member and as an alternate. The deadline for providing these appointments has been extended to September 1, 2017.

The UMS Board of Trustees authorized the UMaine Presidential Search Committee at its July 17, 2017 meeting in Orono.  You can follow these links to view the anticipated search timeline and prospectus.   Click here to read the Bangor Daily News report on the start of the search.

Thank you for considering this volunteer opportunity to serve your fellow students and the University of Maine.  If you have an interest in serving please be sure to email me a letter of interest and resume by the Friday, August 10th deadline.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!
