Dental Assisting Certificate Offered
at University College at Bath/Brunswick

Beginning this fall, the University of Maine at Augusta’s Bangor campus will deliver its Dental Assisting Certificate Program via videoconferencing to locations state-wide, including University College at Bath/Brunswick.

The job outlook for dental assistants is excellent. Employment in this field is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2014. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that it will be the third fastest growing occupation for which a full degree is not required.

“This program is the only Dental Assisting Program in Maine that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation,” said Curtis. “As such, it is the only course of study that makes graduates eligible to take the exam to become Certified Dental Assistants.”

Most graduates are employed in private dental practices where there are both full-time and part-time employment opportunities. They serve as indispensable partners to the dentist, assisting him or her with each chair-side procedure. Community health agencies, specialty dental practices, hospitals and schools offer additional career opportunities for dental assistants.

University College at Bath/Brunswick will offer four of the program’s 13 required courses during the fall 2008 semester. These include Chair-side Dental Assisting I, Bio-dental Sciences I, Dental Radiology, and Dental Materials. Laboratories will be scheduled in Augusta.
