USES AND DISCLOSURES ABOUT DECEDENTS
I. Coroners and Medical Examiners
A HCC may disclose PHI to a coroner or medical examiner for the purpose of identifying a deceased person, determining a cause of death, or other duties as authorized by statute. A HCC that also performs the duties of a coroner or medical examiner may use PHI for these purposes.
II. Funeral Directors
A HCC may disclose PHI to funeral directors, as authorized or required by statute, as necessary to carry out their duties with respect to the decedent.
III. Additional Requirements
Except in an emergency, a HCC shall consult with the Privacy Official and University Counsel prior to making a disclosure under this Policy.
