Life the way it should be

What is the Maine State Immunizations Law?

Maine State Law (20-A M.R.S.A.§ 6359) requires both full-time and degree seeking part-time post-secondary school students born after December 31, 1956 to show proof of immunization against measles, mumps, rubella,

diphtheria and tetanus.

Immunization records may be found on birth records, school immunization records, hospital /clinic records, and military records.

The record copy must show the following:

Diphtheria and tetanus (dT) vaccines must have been given within the last 10 years. If only a tetanus shot has been given within the last 5 years, then the person may be temporarily exempt from the diphtheria requirement. You must be re-immunized if your diphtheria/tetanus is out of date.

Measles (Rubeola) mumps and rubella must have been given after the recipients first birthday with a live vaccine. If the vaccine was given before 1968, documentation must show proof of a live virus. If this cannot be determined, re-immunization is required.

Re-immunization is highly recommended if the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine was given before 1980.

A blood titer (a measure of your bloods ability to react to the virus) which demonstrates immunity may also be used to meet state requirements.

What proof is needed for registration?

In order to participate in classes within the University of Maine System, you need to provide proof of immunizations prior to the start of classes.

Proof of immunization is documented by a copy of your immunization record.
The immunization record should be signed by a clinician or have a clinic stamp. A copy of your high school health immunization record is also acceptable.

When submitting immunization records, make sure every page of the documents submitted includes your name, student ID and birth date.

What if I'm only taking On-Line Courses?

A student who is enrolled in a distance education program offered by a school and who does not physically attend any classes or programs at a school facility, including a campus, center or site of that school, or at a school facility, including a campus, center or site of any other school, is exempt from the provisions of the immunization laws according to Maine Statutes (M.R.S.A. 20-A, § 6359(6)).
