Internet2® and the University of Maine System
What is Internet2?
Internet2 is an experimental high-speed version of the Internet, dedicated to research and education. The University of Maine System is a member of the Internet2 project. Researchers in the University System benefit from the advanced videoconferencing, high-speed computer connections and a multitude of other innovations generated by this project. We connect to the Abilene high-speed Internet2 backbone via the Northern Crossroads (NoX) organization. For more information on Internet2, Abilene and NoX please use the following links:
A Sampling of UMS Research Projects Benefiting from Internet2
Faculty and students in the University of Maine System constantly experience the benefits of the high connection speeds between Internet2 member institutions. In addition, some research projects are designed to use certain features of Internet2, or would not be feasible without it. The brief descriptions below represent a sample of these projects.
- Dr. James Fastook, University of Maine Computer Science Department, collaborates with colleagues in Stockholm, Sweden. He can install software remotely on the machines in Sweden, login and manipulate data, etc. at speeds equivalent those on his local campus network. In particular he shares the huge UMISM, U. Maine Ice Sheet Model, datasets with his colleagues. Without the speed of Internet2, file transfers of this size would be impracticable. Dr. Fastook also uses the Access Grid to meet with fellow researchers.
- Internet2 at the University of Maine has enabled several research and education efforts in the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) and the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering. The initiation of a new master's program in Information Systems addressing professionals throughout the State of Maine has been possible, because the entire course content could be delivered remotely through the web. In a similar way, a new Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems was approved in the Spring of 2002, the content of which will be available through the Web. With the advancement of Web mapping technologies and Internet2, it is becoming possible to run such data intensive operations as spatial analysis over the Web.
- NCGIA researchers are relying more and more on the high-bandwidth communication to collaborate remotely with researchers at other locations. The NCGIA consortium (UMaine, UC Santa Barbara, and University at Buffalo) uses Internet2 extensively for project management across the three sites. In a similar way, under a new NSF-funded ITR project (UMaine, Iowa State University, and UC San Diego, http://www.spatial.maine.edu/%7Epeggy/geogrid.html, NCGIA researchers are working on shared imagery, video, and map archives to develop the foundation of the GeoGrid. Two new research directions include investigations of the foundations for the Geospatial Semantic Web (Funding from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, http://www.spatial.maine.edu/~max/SGW.html) and the development of a shared Web resource for a geographic information commons (pending proposal)
