Safe email practices

The term "Phishing" was coined as the name given to the practice of sending emails at random declaring to come from a legitimate company operating on the Internet, in an attempt to trick customers of that company into divulging information to a fake website operated by hackers. These emails usually claim that it is necessary to "update" or "verify" your customer account information and urge unsuspecting customers to click on a link from the email which takes them to the fake website.

How to spot a phishing attack

The University of Maine System, just like a bank, though they may contact their customers via email, they will never ask them to confirm their login or password information by clicking on a link in an email and visiting a website.  If you do receive an email from your financial institution, stop and think for a minute to think about how your bank normally communicates with you and never disclose your password in full or personal information.
