General Notice on UMS Responsibilities Related to Opportunity Maine
The University of Maine System (UMS) participates in the Opportunity Maine program in order to make certain calculations and certifications. UMS will certify only that an individual has "obtained the relevant degree" according to its own records and "whether or not the total principal costs of in-state tuition and mandatory fees [were] incurred in pursuit of the degree" based upon information provided by the individual. UMS has no independent knowledge of all loans a student may have received or for which credit is claimed. UMS relies, therefore, solely upon the individual's representations. UMS provides standard materials for the individual to complete and cannot certify whether the statutory or any other qualifying criteria are met. UMS makes no certification of an individual's interpretations of the Opportunity Maine legislation but only that its materials provide for the completion of appropriate information and that the individual has completed it under oath. The truth and accuracy of any claims or interpretations of the law is at all times the responsibility of the individual and nothing provided by UMS in providing this service may in any way be interpreted as legal or tax advice.
