Graduate Certificates
UMaine's Child & Family Service Certificate will benefit people who work in human service agencies such as mental health centers, child welfare, child and family services agencies, and many other social services settings. The program’s focus is on the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for practice with children and families. Courses are available via two-way video at the seven University of Maine System campuses, University College of Bangor, the Hutchinson Center in Belfast, and Lewiston-Auburn College.* Program information sheet. The University of Maine Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition is pleased to announce the recent approval of a new distance graduate certificate program. This program is designed to provide professionals working in education, healthcare, food processing and other fields with a background in food and nutrition. The certificate program consists of 15 credits of advanced coursework. The required online courses are FSN 436 Food Law and FSN 603 Nutrients and Food Processing. Both courses are available for the spring of 2008. An additional 9 credits of electives drawn from FSN courses at the 400, 500 and 600 level are selected with the assistance of the certificate coordinator to meet students’ professional and personal interests. University of Maine's Graduate Certificate Program in Information Systems is primarily Web-based. The 18-credit hour program focuses on the technical, managerial and policy issues associated with constructing and managing computer-based information systems for modern organizations. The objectives of the program are to meet the growing demand in society for high-level information system skills and provide a path for women and men from diverse fields to rapidly transition to information system career paths.* Program information sheet. University of Southern Maine’s Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community Certificate is especially suited for practitioners who currently work in the mental health system and who desire training in psychosocial rehabilitation, or for persons with prior graduate training who need flexible coursework to update their skills and knowledge in the psychosocial rehabilitation approach. Persons with bachelor’s degrees and one year of direct experience in the mental health field may apply for a five-course sequence. The Certificate of Graduate Study in Applied Research & Evaluation Methods is designed for students and practitioners who want to learn to use data effectively on the job and in the community. The certificate emphasizes data acquisition, data analysis and presentation, choosing and applying statistical techniques to real world problems, and practical application of analytical tools.
The Certificate of Graduate Studies in Health Policy and Management provides health professionals from diverse backgrounds a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in health policy, planning and financing, as well as the fundamentals of health care management and community health. Undergraduate Certificates
University of Maine Augusta’s Child and Youth Care Practitioner Certificate offers a 30-credit-hour sequence of courses for people who provide direct services to youth in group homes, residential treatment, shelters, juvenile corrections, foster care, day care and other community outreach support programs. University of Maine's Certificate of Classical Studies offers students interested in the classics, mythology, the origins of customs and values and ideas as well as the Latin language, a program of study at a distance via ITV and computer. University of Maine at Fort Kent offers the Certificate of Study in Criminal Justice to those interested in or currently practicing in the criminal justice or law enforcement fields. All nine of the courses will be offered online, including electives. This certificate is also appropriate preparation for entry into the UMFK two-year Criminal Justice and four-year Rural Public Safety Administration programs, normally offered on campus. University of Maine at Augusta's Dental Assisting Certificate Program is designed for individuals who are interested in becoming members of the dental health care delivery system. The curriculum is designed to provide a broad educational experience in the theory and practice of dental assisting, as well as a background in biological sciences and the humanities.

The University of Maine Certificate in Maine Studies offers students an opportunity to pursue a multidisciplinary study of Maine through courses in history, literature, women's studies, economics, political science, geology, geography and biology. University of Maine Augusta’s Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community Certificate is appropriate for persons working in the mental health field who have direct-service experience in mental health, but who lack formal higher education or for those individuals who wish to seek employment in the mental health field. This program emphasizes a basic understanding of human behavior, mental health rehabilitation skills, and a foundation in the methods and values of psychosocial rehabilitation. UMaine's Peace Studies Program focuses on education for peace, justice, human rights, nonviolence, tolerance, global understanding, interdependence and mutuality, and environmental responsibility. University of Maine Augusta’s Certificate Program in Substance Abuse Rehabilitation provides coursework relevant to the education requirements for licensure. At present, an applicant for licensure must have a minimum of an associate degree in a substance abuse rehabilitation related field. This certificate provides the necessary course work for people who are interested in becoming substance abuse counselors or who already have a degree in another field. The State of Maine licensing law requires that in addition to the specialized course work in the field, individuals must also complete 4,000 hours of work experience in a facility licensed by the State of Maine Office of Substance Abuse. Our certificate program only provides the education component; students must complete the 4,000 hours in addition to the coursework. Contact: Grace Leonard.
