Veterans Upward Bound
Veterans Upward Bound (VUB), a new statewide program designed to support eligible veterans in preparing for entrance to and success in college. The program is funded through a federal TRIO grant and supports veterans in attainment of a degree within six years of enrollment in a program of postsecondary education. VUB is located at the University of Southern Maine but is funded to serve 125 veterans annually throughout the state, regardless of their intended school of enrollment.
The program provides advising, mentoring, tutoring, and academic instruction in core subject areas. The outcomes-based learning opportunities focus on preparation for success. VUB classes are small or one-on-one and self-paced, based on individual academic needs. Online and in-person options give participants an opportunity to refresh and develop the academic skills required for success in college-level coursework; no grades are given, and no academic credits are earned. In addition to this core academic program, VUB offers a series of workshops focused on the following topics: admissions and financial aid application processes, career exploration, financial literacy, experience translation, and self-assessment. Additional support can be tailored to individual veteran needs.
