16 Central Street building closure

UPDATE 6:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 25

16 Central St. open at 8:00 a.m.
Repairs to the water service at 16 Central Street are complete, as of late last evening. Both water and electricity are working.
The office will open at 8:00 a.m. and the building information line indicates this as well. Employees are asked to use the entrance at the back of the building (at the corner of Hammond & Franklin) Streets to allow time for Dennis to finish cleaning the front stairway, which got dirty from the steady stream of workers going in and out of that entry to the basement.

UPDATE 5:10 p.m., Monday, Aug. 24
Water problems continue
Utility workers resolved some of the water service issues at 16 Central Street, but an additional smaller leak was discovered this afternoon. The building was without water service for most of the day and continues to be in that situation.

As noted earlier today, electrical service has been restored and therefore the building information line is functioning. Employees should call that number after 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday to receive an update on the building status.

Utility workers expect to resolve the second leak and restore the water this evening, so that we may return to work on Tuesday.

UPDATE 11:23 a.m.

UNIVERSITY OF MAINE SYSTEM OFFICE BUILDING WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY

The University of Maine System office at 16 Central Street will be closed for the entire day on Monday, August 24, 2009.

The building had been expected to reopen at noon today, after it was shut down on Sunday due to a water main break which occurred on the Franklin Street side of the building. This affected water and electrical service to the building. Work crews continue to address the water main break repairs and other recovery efforts are under way.

A University of Maine System Board of Trustees Technology Committee meeting which had been scheduled to take place at the downtown office today has been relocated to Orono at UMaine's Neville Hall, in room 134 at 1:30 p.m.

UMS employees should call the "building information line" for updates.

UPDATE 10:15 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24

The University of Maine System office at 16 Central Street will be closed for the entire day.

Work crews continue to address the water main break repairs and other recovery efforts are under way. Power has been restored to the building.

Employees who require remote desktop access to their computers are advised to call Mike Sauda, who is in the building and may turn power on to desktop computers by request.

With the power restoration, the building information line is up and running again. Employees should call that number to receive updates on the building status.

Previous Update: Monday, Aug. 24, 8:00 a.m.

Utility workers continue to conduct repairs to the water line which ruptured on Sunday afternoon. Both water and power to the building continue to be unavailable and, as a result, the building remains closed.

Employees should note that the battery backup to the "building information line" has expired due to the extended power outage, so the phone is not operational at this time.
It is, however, expected to be back in service in approximately one hour.

At this time, plans still call for the building to open at 12 noon.
Please check here for further updates, after 10:00 a.m.
