Background:   Nearly half of all nurses in Maine’s rural coastal counties (Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, Waldo, Hancock, and Washington) are over the age of 55.  The Maine University Nursing Workforce Plan aims to double nursing enrollment, expand nursing education into high-need regions, and provide free tuition and mandatory fee access to nursing education to Maine students with the greatest financial need.  As part of this plan the University of Maine in Augusta plans to bring nursing education to Brunswick, Ellsworth, Rockland and Rumford.

Rural Nursing Engagement: Community support and strong partnerships with local healthcare facilities will be crucial to the success of these programs. The University of Maine at Augusta is launching its engagement with community and healthcare partners with a luncheon in Ellsworth.  University leaders participating in the conversation include:

  • Jonathan Henry, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing

  • Dr. Brenda McAleer, Dean of the College of Professional Studies

  • Deborah Meehan, Executive Director of UMA Centers

Virtual Attendance: Meeting Participants and the Media may attend the meeting from a computer via Zoom.  First time users will be prompted to download software to participate or dial in. Space is limited for virtual attendance. Members of media are asked to RSVP with Dan.Demeritt@maine.edu.
