ADVISORY: Student Press Conference on Tuition Vote

WHAT:   Students led by Student Board of Trustee Representative Paul Nelson will hold a press conference today at the Wells Conference Center at the University of Maine reacting to the Board of Trustees’ historic vote on tuition.

BACKGROUND:  The University of Maine System Board of Trustees will vote today on a resolution freezing public, instate tuition for a fourth year.  If the trustees pass the directive holding tuition at FY 2012 levels it will be the the longest period without an instate tuition increase in the history of Maine’s Public University System.  A copy of the resolution, predicated by funding provided to public higher education in Governor LePage’s budget proposal, can be found at the very last page of the BOT Board Materials found at this link:  http://www.maine.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Full-Meeting-Materials-no-Confidential-materials1.pdf

Maine leads the nation in its commitment to public, 4-year instate higher education affordability according to inflation adjusted data compiled by the College Board.  Over the last five years no other state has matched our nominal 0% increase in public, 4-year instate tuition rates.  The national average, inflation adjusted tuition increase has been 17%
