Policy Statement:

The University recognizes achievement, scholarship, and service by the presentation of special awards. The Board of Trustees delegates to Presidents responsibility for the following awards:

Distinguished Achievement Awards may be awarded to individuals who have gained regional or national recognition for outstanding professional achievements. Recipients are expected to have some connection with the State of Maine, except in the case of nationally known persons. The Board delegates the responsibility for this award to the President and it may be presented at appropriate times and functions throughout the year.

Distinguished Scholar Awards may be awarded to members of the University or college faculty or administration for scholarly achievements during the previous five years. The Board delegates the responsibility for this award to the Presidents. The Distinguished Scholar Award may be conferred at regular Commencement or Special Convocation exercises.

Distinguished Service Awards may be awarded to residents of the State of Maine or alumni of the University of Maine System institutions for their contributions to the University and to the State. The Board delegates the responsibility for this award to the universities. The Distinguished Service Award may be presented at appropriate time and functions throughout the year.
